South-West insists on producing national chairman of PDP

The South-West chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has appealed to national leadership of the party to allow the region produce the next national chairman of the party.

The party leaders from the six states of the zone, who met in Ibadan yesterday, hinged their appeal on the fact that since the formation of the party in 1998, South-West had no opportunity of leading the party.

The leaders, however, recognised the decision of the party to zone the office to the South but insisted that it was the turn of the South-West to produce the national chairman of the party.

They also said that the region was desirous of the office to help in their membership drive and wrestle power back from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the region.

The Zonal Chairman of the party, Eddy Oyeweso, who read a communique at the end of the leaders’ meeting in Ibadan, said: “Since inception in 1998 till date, our party had 12 national chairmen”, noting that it is only the South-West out of the six geo-political zones that has not held the position of the national chairman despite the historic contributions of the zone to the development of the party.
