The Niger Delta Renaissance Organisation says it will be
holding its Renaissance Week from Monday 27th April 2015 through Saturday
2nd May 2015.
The group in a press statement made available to newsmen in
Port Harcourt and signed by its National Coordinator Comrade Nwokoma Messiah
and Benjamin Etuk National Director of Mobilisation said highlight of the
Renaissance Week will feature a Special Award to former Niger Delta warlord
High Chief Ateke Tom.
The group said it will be honouring Ateke Tom for his efforts
at promoting peace in the Niger Delta region. The group particularly praised
his stance that he and his boys will not go back to the creeks despite the loss
of President Goodluck Jonathan in the March 28th polls.
The NDRO says the stance of Ateke Tom coming on the heels of
the threat of another militant leader Asari Dokubo that ex warlords will go
back to the creeks due to the failure of Jonathan to get reelected, helped
douse tensions that developed in the region due to the threat. It said the
award will help spur other Niger Delta ex militants to toe the line of peace in
their dealings. “Nigerians were aware of the threat of Asari Dokubo that the
region will witness violence as a result of the victory of Gen. Buhari over
President Jonathan a son of the Niger Delta. But the tension was put off due to
the peace speech made by High Chief Ateke Tom. We will be honouring him with
this piece award to encourage other ex warlords to preach peace in the region
also” the statement added.
The group said other activities lined up for the Renaissance
Week will include Special Prayers for the country, visitation to motherless
babies home, symposium for youths, as well as a choral night.
