The Niger Delta Renaissance Organisation NDRO has criticized comments
accredited to former Minister of Defense Theophilus Danjuma who said Ojukwu would have averted the civil war.
The former Army chief purportedly made this statement when he had an interaction
with the President in Abuja.
The group in a press statement signed by its National
Coordinator said the statement was uncharitable as it is incisive. According to
the group, “coming at a period when the Oba of Lagos has threatened Ndigbo in
Lagos over whom to vote, such statement is not the beast considering the
magnanimity of President Jonathan in conceding defeat despite the high level
betrayal against his reelection bid.” The group said it was imperative that the
President addressed the issue which it said is spite on the thousands of people
that were assassinated by the senseless pogrom of the late sixties.
The group described late Odumegwu Ojukwu as a true hero of
the Igbos and the Niger Deltans who despite the threat to his life, stood up
and fought to liberate his people against injustice.
The group called on T Y Danjuma to apologise to the family of
Odumegwu Ojukwu and Ndigbo over his irrational comment. “we don’t think any
reasonable person will fold his hands while his people are being massacred as
it was then. The fact that Jonathan despite the conspiracy against his reelection
bid, kept quiet does not mean we should start making unguided comments to rationalize
the evil perpetrated against a peace loving people. The election though highly
flawed in many respects, was peaceful and we should leave at that. We expect him to use the old age God has given him positively rather than making divisive comments” the group
added.
