The gale of defections
in the National Assembly last week was followed by an advice from no one else
than Sen. Abu Ibrahim that the Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki as well as
the Speaker of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara and others in the
fold of the All Progressives Congress APC that are still masquerading in the
party should resign their membership of the party. This call which also implies
that they resign their positions as leaders of the various arms of the National
Assembly is yet to be complied with by those concerned as at the time of writing this piece
Whatever their reasons
for still staying put in the party may be, the fact of the matter is that their continued stay in the party has become a sore which must be extricated from the body.
As I watched through the proceedings of the defections on national television, I wept for the country for producing such leaders that lack morality despite all the party has given them politically which they ordinarily wouldn't have gotten if they had still remained in the Peoples Democratic Party PDP sequel to the last general elections across the country.

Nigerians are gradually
knowing and understanding that the present leadership of the National Assembly
especially that of the Senate is anti-people and are driven by selfishness
rather than altruistic purposes. It should be noted that most of them in the
National Assembly did not come on their own merit but were swept into office by
the credibility of the Buhari Tsunami which also brought in some governors that today boast that
they have political value. What most of them fail to see is that President
Muhammadu Buhari’s popularity has been increased as a result of their
defections and when the time comes it will not only be Tsunami but something
bigger.
What Saraki and others
in his camp that are still in the APC should do is to heed the advice of Sen.
Abu Ibrahim by resigning their membership of the party and let’s see if they
will still boast of majority support of Nigerians as they think they have today.
It is evident that they are scared hence their decision to stay on and look for
a soft landing or for ways to destroy and discredit the party before Nigerians which is not
possible in any way. It is a shame that some politicians think politics is all
about lying to the people and manipulating them to achieve their inordinate interests.
Just the other day Sen. Saraki denied he will never leave that party and the next day he
is supervising, encouraging and wooing others to leave a party that gave him
the opportunity of being the number three man in the country!
Never in the history of
our beloved country have we suffered the kind of rudderless Senate that we are
witnessing under Sen. Saraki. It has been more of politics, distractions and
scandals than the real business of legislating which is against what the
APC stands for. Nigerians must rise up against this and ensure that they demand
for their resignation not only from the APC but from the positions they occupy
because they don’t deserve it in any way at all.
We have better Senators
from the All Progressives Congress APC fold that can occupy that seat and give the
Senate and the National Assembly at large an articulate, mature and focused leadership
which will be in line with the Change agenda of Mr. President. The country is
running to standstill as a result of their unnecessary ego trip against the
President. Imagine situations where they have failed to screen appointees that
should have assumed office long time ago and drive President Buahri’s change
agenda to a great extent for the betterment of Nigerians.
If this administration
under President Muhammadu Buhari fails, it is the President that will be at the
receiving end and never will history mention the likes of the Senate president
and his band of followers as being behind the failure of the administration and
trust Nigerians, they will easily forget the mischief of the Senate President,
Speaker of the House of Representatives as well as others that are worshipping
them.
Sen. Abu Ibrahim is a
well respected leader whose accomplishments as Senator representing his people
is there for all to see. As Chairman of Board of Trustees of Buhari Support
Groups, he has done so much for the Change movement and when he speaks,
Nigerians listen to him and are usually in support of his nationalistic and
altruistic stand. This is why the support for his call on Saraki and co to
resign is receiving support across the federation
and as responsible leaders which they claim they are, we are expecting a
situation where they will resign from the party and give room for true
progressives to take charge.
