Senator Ali Ndume is
one of the Senators in the present 8th Assembly that has impressed
many Nigerians with the way he has carried out his duties as a senator of the
Federal Republic of Nigeria. His passion for the truth, fearlessness and
humaneness are characteristics that cannot be taken away from him. This former
leader of the Senate that was dramatically removed from his position as Senate
Leader by people who dislike the truth has since his ordeal, moved ahead not
minding the fact that the issues he raised that also led to his been suspended
for 90 legislative days remain salient in our national life.
As a strong supporter
of President Muhammadu Buhari who has been severally attacked by hatchet dogs
of the Senate President, I and various supporters of Mr. President see Senator
Ali Ndume as a motivating factor for our support and admiration of the present
leadership of the country that has done so much to tackle the rot that pervaded
the country in the almost two decades that hyenas were in charge at the helm of
affairs of the country.
When members of the
Senate refused to confirm the nomination of the present Chief Executive of the
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC Ibrahim Magu, the indefatigable senator
from Borno state was at the forefront to discountenance the actions of the
upper legislative house. His support via the accusation he made against the Senate
President as well as the boyish Senator Dino Melaye earned him an unnecessary
suspension from the Senate and also cost him his position as leader of the
Senate. This is a price that one has to pay for being frank in the country.
But with the way the
EFCC under Ibrahim Magu has carried out his duties especially with the successful
conviction of high profile political office holders, we cannot pretend that
what Sen. Ndume had said concerning the sincerity and efficacy of Ibrahim Magu
can be doubted.
I may not be from Borno
state or from the Senatorial zone that Sen. Ndume represents but from the way
and manner he has carried on with his duty as a serving Senator, I and a vast
majority of Nigerians across religious, ethnic and political divide see in him
a quintessential leader that has not only his constituents but the country at
heart.
Another area which Sen.
Ndume has impressed us is in his alert on the betrayal nature of the present
Senate President Bukola Saraki who was supported by majority members of the
upper legislative house (Sen. Ndume inclusive)
as swell as a cross section of Nigerians for the position of President
of the Nigerian Senate but whose actions today leaves much to be desired by
members of our great party that supported his emergence as Senate President.
The rumours that made the round about the intention of the Senate President to
jump ship alongside his supporters of the so called reformed APC to the
opposition Peoples Democratic Party PDP through a contraption none as the
Coalition of Political Parties (CUPP) highlighted the kind of character that
Sen. Ndume urged Nigerians to beware of. I appreciate the fact that President Buhari
has had a meeting with him at the Presidential Villa and is optimistic that he
will recant his steps but as we remain expectant, it is important also that we
hail the Senator Representing Borno South for his clarion call on the kind of
person we have as Senate President who does not deserve to be trusted.
At the home front, Sen.
Ali Ndume has performed creditably. His proactive representation has endeared
him to the masses in his zone leading to his been viewed as a cult figure in
the area. The kind of support Ndume has in his senatorial zone is so massive
that it will be nearly impossible for anybody to dislodge him from the senate
if he chose to come back to the red chambers. I will like to summarise my
article by quoting a member of his constituency Mr. Abba Bello who I discussed
the senator’s positive representation with. His words were “Sen. Ali Ndume is
God’s gift to our people. He has carried out a lot of constituency projects
that has made us love him seriously. He has empowered many farmers, widows as
well as youths of Borno South Senatorial zone and his recent call on the
federal government to complete the Biu Dam which was awarded almost 37 years
ago shows you the kind of leader he is. By God’s grace if he decides to go back
to the Senate come 2019, you will see the kind of support he will get”.
Incidentally, Mr. Bello is not the only one that shares this view.
