With the gale of
defections that enveloped the National Assembly this week, one Nigerian who has
been proved right is Sen. Ali Ndume. The Borno born parliamentarian had raised
alarm as to the betrayal attitude of the Senate President Sen. Bukola Saraki
who is the major sponsor of the so called reformed APC a whose emergence as a faction of the party
was needed by the defectors perfect their plans.
As I watched through
the proceedings of the defections on national television, I wept for the
country for producing such leaders that lack morality. Sen. Ndume a well-respected
and accomplished lawmaker had suffered in the hands of the Bukola Saraki led Senate
for standing for on the path of truth. Aside being stripped of the Senate
leader status, he was also suspended for six months! Has he been proven right
by the actions displayed by those that persecuted him? The answer is in the
affirmative.
Nigerians are gradually
knowing and understanding that the present leadership of the National Assembly
especially the Senate is anti-people and are driven by selfishness rather than
altruistic purposes. It should be noted that most of them in the National
Assembly did not come on their own merit but were swept into office by the
Buhari Tsunami which also brought in some governors that today boast that they
have political value. What most of them fail to see is that President Muhammadu
Buhari’s popularity has been increased as a result of their defections and when
the time comes it will not only be Tsunami but something bigger.
What Saraki and others
in his camp that are still masquerading in the APC should do is to heed the
advice of Sen. Abu Ibrahim by resigning their membership of the party and let’s
see if they will still boast of majority support of Nigerians. The truth is
that they are scared hence their decision to stay on and look for a soft
landing. It is a shame that some politicians think politics is all about lying
to the people and manipulating them to achieve their interests. Just the other
day he denied he will never leave that party and the next thing he is
encouraging and wooing others to leave a party that gave him the opportunity of
being the number three man in the country.
Never in the history of
our beloved country have we suffered the kind of rudderless Senate that we are witnessing
under Saraki. It has been more of politics, distractions and scandals than the
real business of legislating which is unbecoming of what the APC stands for.
Nigerians must rise up against this and ensure that they demand for their
resignation not only from the APC but from the positions they occupy because
they don’t deserve it.
We have better Senators
that can occupy that seat and give the Senate and the National Assembly at
large a focused leadership which will be in line with the Change agenda of Mr.
President. The country is running to standstill as a result of their unnecessary
ego trip against the President. Imagine situations where they have failed to
screen appointees that should have assumed office and drive President Buahri’s
change agenda. If this government fails it is the President that will be at the
receiving end and never will history mention the likes of the Senate president
and his band of followers.
My advice to
progressive members of the National assembly both at the Red and Green chambers
is that they remain steadfast and counter the fiendish manipulations of the
retrogressive forces who mean no good for the country but for themselves. To
Sen. Ndume and recently Sen. Omo Agege, I will say they are true heroes of the
8th National assembly and posterity will not fail to remember the
roles they played in ensuring that the evil plots of the vultures does not see
the light.
