The Rivers Progressives Alliance has described the governorship primaries of the party which took place in the state capital last Sunday as a complete sham which will only end up affecting the chances of the party in the forthcoming general elections next year.
The group in a press statement signed by its spokesman Comrade Eddy Tekenah said the outcome of the primaries have only fuelled the allegations that the leader of the party in the state Rt. Honourable Rotimi Amaechi was working for the interest of the state governor Barr. Nyesom Wike.
“Recall that there have been allegations of an agreement between the state governor and the Presidency which suggests that the governor will work against the interest of his political party the Peoples Democratic Party PDP by ensuring that a weak candidate is presented to battle it out with President Muhammadu Buhari in exchange for fielding a weak candidate from the APC at the state level to battle it out against Governor Wike come 2019, what we are experiencing today is the reality of that conspiracy theory” the group alleged in their statement.
The group described the outcome of the primaries as unacceptable to the people of the riverine area which the Minister of Transportation has always said he is working for. “Mr. Amaechi is really not working for the interest of the people of the riverine area of the state rather he is working against their interest and it is important that they wake up to this reality.
“During the last general elections it was the same thing he did by fielding a weak candidate to fight Nyesom Wike and this time around he has decided to field an unpopular candidate when the likes of Barr. Dumo Lulu Briggs who has sacrificed so much for the party and the state is contesting. Is Dumo not a successful businessman with experience and acceptability? Is he not a loyal party member who has done so much to bring people to the party? Why scheme him out for an unpopular candidate that does not have appeal to the people? The group queried.
The Rivers Progressives Alliance urged the National Working Committee of the APC to reverse the sham Primaries and ensure that it quickly holds another primaries preferably using the Direct primaries that will be free and fair to elect an acceptable candidate that will fly the party’s flag come 2019.
