Hon. Ossai Nicholas Ossai is one of the leading
members of the present 8th Assembly. He is the Chairman of the Committee on
Ethics and Privileges in the House. He is representing Ndokwa/Ukwani Federal
Constituency Delta State. In this interview with Naijanewsmaker, he speaks on
the achievements of Sen. Ifeanyi Okowa as well as the defection of Hon. Cairo
Ojougbo among other issues of concern.
Excerpts
Delta State was considered the 2nd most
emergency state after Lagos State? How do you feel about this?
I
feel very proud of Governor Okowa even with Meager resources that comes to
Delta State without meeting up to the extent of paying the wage bill, he was
still able to pay all the wage bills and create a platform where Delta State
people are going to be trained, re-trained and empowered to start up their
businesses and these efforts have been yielding fruits for the past 2 two years. You will see
that people have lost enthusiasm on politics and are going back to the farm and
they are now producing, packaging and repackaging agricultural products. These
are things that the APC Government in Abuja is talking about yet not
implementing. But, Gov. Okowa has gone as far as laying this solid foundation
for our teaming youths for the betterment of the future of this generation.
I think, we should be proud of the Governor
who has the foresight to develop the state and create enabling environment in
terms of making sure he attracts investors to come and invest in Delta State.
Are you satisfied with level of education in state?
I
am very satisfied. The Governor has done creditably well virtually all the
schools are being renovated and books are being given to schools. Teachers are
being trained and retrained to be able to impact positively well on their
pupils.
Another
key area the Gov. has taken interest is in developing its technical education.
To train people to have skills at the secondary school level, in those days,
they used to have skills but at some point, Nigeria jettisoned it.
You
will be amazed on the developmental strides of the Governor and equipments have
been brought to instill skills to the technical students and by the time they
leave schools, they don’t need to look for white collar jobs because they are
already employed and have technical skills in various areas like Welding,
Bricklaying, P.O.P, Industrial Welders etc.
On the decision of Hon. Cairo Ojougboh to jump ship
to the ruling APC. Do you think it is a threat to PDP?
I
don’t think anybody is a threat to PDP. Delta State is a P.D.P state and the
people believe in PDP so, I don’t think Delta State is ready to do away with
PDP. Again, how can you have a performing Governor, performing Hon. Members,
and you still want to jettison such a party? But, it is about choice and he has
made his choice of course the door is always open for him to come back if he so
wishes.
2019 what are your plans? Are you under pressured to
come back?
I
don’t feel under any pressure. I have to prepare myself mentally and when the
time comes I will make known my plans.
