The senator representing Bayelsa Central in the National
Assembly, Emmanuel Paulker, has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to reintroduce
the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) before parliament so as to ensure its passage
into law.
Although the House of Representatives passed the PIB on the
last legislative day of the seventh National Assembly, the failure of the
Senate to give its concurrence made the passage of the lower house of no
effect.
Speaking to journalists monyesterday in Abuja after
submitting his governorship nomination form at the PDP headquarters, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum
Resources (Upstream) in the seventh Senate, Emmanuel Paulker, said the bill was
“too important to be introduced as a private bill.”
Paulker, who is currently a member of the eighth Senate,
therefore urged the administration of Buhari to reintroduce the bill to the
eighth assembly for consideration.
He said: “A lot of discourse has taken place on the issue
concerning the PIB. As the Chairman of Upstream, I had the privilege of
chairing that committee. The PIB is a very important bill and don’t lose sight
to the fact that the PIB was an executive bill. And the seventh Senate has
elapsed and that means either the executive introduce the bill to the National
Assembly or coming through a private bill.
“But most importantly because of the nature of the bill, I
expect the present administration will reintroduce the bill to the eighth
Senate for consideration. A lot of work was done on the PIB, it was at the
stage of passing third reading when the life of the last Assembly lapsed.
“So, I believe because of the importance of the bill, the
present administration will definitely reintroduce the bill for consideration
by the National Assembly,” he said.
