Hon. Ahmed Rufai Chanchangi (Kaduna/APC) had made the claim in Abuja on Tuesday.
According to him, out of the 92 reps-elect from the North West, between 75 and 80 were backing Gbajabiamila’s speakership bid.
Dismissing the position, some lawmakers from the zone said majority of the North West lawmakers were with Hon. Yakubu Dogara.
Hon. Ibrahim Babangida Mahuta (Katsina/APC) told journalists yesterday that: “There is no way Femi Gbajabiamila will get 75 people from the North West.
“We have done all our analysis and discovered that Dogara has more lawmakers than Femi in the zone. So, we don’t know how they came up with that.”
He said Dogara has 13 lawmakers behind him in Kano, nine in Katsina, 16 from Kaduna, 10 from Sokoto, six in Zamfara, making 54, while they were still compiling those from Kebbi and Jigawa states.
Meanwhile the Niger Delta Renaissance Organisation says the members of the House of Reps from the Niger Delta Region are comfortable with Hon. Yakubu Dogara as Speaker of the House of Representatives. The group in a chat with Press men anchored by the National Coordinator Comrade Nwokoma Messiah said most of the members the NDRO interacted with expressed support for the candidature of Hon. Yakunu Dogara whom they described as amiable and down to earth. The coordinator said considering the fact that the Hoiuse of Representatives is the mouth peice of the masses in the National Assembly, the people can not afford to have a Speaker who will not be in tuune with the ordinary people. The group described Gbajabiamila as someone who will be out of tune with the yearnings and aspirations of the people.
It has also been revealed that Hon. Dogara may be exploiting his contacts with some key leaders in the Niger Delta region to reach out to members from the region. This according to our sources is the reason for his popularity amongst members from the region.
