In the alternative, the lawmakers are to make their choice on who leads them in the Senate and House of Representatives.
A pointer to the new development came yesterday when the President-elect, Gen Muhammadu Buhari, distanced himself from insinuations that he has anointed some candidates in the two chambers.
A member of the APC Board of Trustees (BoT) who doesn’t want to be named, said the inability of party leaders to agree on the zoning formula has resulted to increased pressure to allow the Senate and House to chose their leaders .
Rather than impose candidates on the two chambers, the party, it was understood , has asked members to ensure that a consensus emerge from the array of aspirants contesting for the Senate presidency and the House speakership.
In the case of the contest in the Senate, it was learnt that outgoing governors of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio and Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State (both senators-elect) are leading the campaign for Senator Bukola Saraki campaign for senate presidency.
Also, former governor of Ebonyi State, Dr. Sam Egwu, who is also a senator-elect, is equally rooting for Saraki.
A prominent senator revealed that a meeting was held Tuesday night at Transcorp Hilton Hotel and focused on how to get all the senators to back Saraki’s aspiration.
Already, he claimed that 76 senators are backing the Kwara State former governor .
The source explained that the meeting was co-chaired by Senator Gobir from Sokoto, Dino Melaye, Kogi State and Governor Akpabio. He said the attraction to Saraki was his leadership qualities which he claimed are ranked higher than his competitors.
