Members of the Civil
Society that observed the All Progressives Congress Ward Congress in Rivers
State has given the party a pass mark on the Congress which held on Saturday the
5th of May 2018 across the country.
The observers who
briefed journalists on the outcome of the Congress said the exercise in Rivers
State went smoothly without any case of irregularity or violence.
Leader of the team of
observers that covered the state Jackson Okojie said it is erroneous to say
that the Congress was tilted towards ensuring that a particular people were
returned as against the general wishes of the party members as suggested in
some quarters. “As much as we do not want to delve into party issues, I wish to
state that it is misleading and erroneous to say that the Congress was
conducted to please a section of the members of the party. We are aware of the
complaints that trailed the Congress by some party members but on the field, on
Saturday, we did not experience any crisis at all. Party members behaved themselves
and at the end, the part was able to produce their executives at the ward level’’
he said.
The observers also
commended the party for adopting the open counting system which they said ensured
that there was transparency. They particularly commended the conduct of the
primaries in Degema, Asari Toru and Akuku Toru local government areas of the
state. ‘’I covered the Degema, Asari Toru and Akuku Toru local governments of
the state alongside other groups and these areas were peaceful other of our colleagues that covered other LGAs
also attest to the fact that it was generally a peaceful exercise’’ he
concluded.
