The cause to create awareness
on the Sustainable Development Goals for Secondary schools in Rivers state will
receive a boost with the hosting of the first United Nations Sustainable
Development Goals flag Off at the Holy Rosary College Port Harcourt. The event
which is been put together by the International Association of World Peace
Advocates IAWPA is aimed at raising awareness of students in the state as to
the activities of the United nations and the Sustainable Development Goals
SDGs.
The International
spokesman of IAWPA Amb. Emmanuel Nkweke who spoke to newsmen in Port Harcourt
city said it is disheartening that most students in the state are at loss as
regards what the SDGs entail. He said his association will ensure that the SDG goals
which member countries came together to adopt in September 25th 2015 is given huge awareness across the
country beginning from Rivers State in
order to ensure that Nigeria is not left behind.
Amb. Nkweke lamented
that it is unfortunate that Nigeria is so much behind in terms of participation
in the United Nations activities while countries like South Africa, Malawi,
Kenya, Botswana among others hold sway. “It is unfortunate that despite our
population, human and natural resources, we do not count in terms of input and
participation in the United Nations and its programmes. The awareness programme
we are raising beginning from Holy Rosary college we believe, will address this
laxity and in the long run, we hope that it will reflect not only on the
conduct of the students of the school but other schools that will key into our
objective of bringing the UN closer to our school children’’.
Amb. Nkweke said it is
imperative that no one is left behind in
the bid to enlighten the student population. While hailing the management of
Holy Rosary College for finding it worthy to host its team for the flag off, he
said Rivers state will soon become a hub for UN and SDGs programmes with the
forthcoming programme which is billed for Wednesday 9th of May 2018
at the school auditorium.
He said the flag off is
a follow up to the SDGs conference held in the state on Goal four at the Rivers
State ministry of Justice on 6th
of February 2018. Amb. Nkweke also said other activities billed for the day
include the conferment of SDGs Emissary Award to Barr. Mrs. Veronica Efika the
Principal of the school thus making her the first School Principal to be
conferred with such award in the state. He called on other Schools and
stakeholders in education to seize the opportunity to participate in the event.
