The Niger Delta Renaissance Organisation a socio political
group based in the Niger Delta region has hailed the leader of the Niger Delta
Vigilante Force High Chief Ateke Tom over his call on Nigerians to support
President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. The group said while some ex
militants have made it their stock in trade to work against the policies of the
Federal Government, High Chief Ateke Tom has occupied himself with patriotic
activities aimed at supporting the present administration at the centre and
building confidence for the government.
The former freedom fighter had in an interview in a national
newspaper called on Nigerians to support the President in order to move the
country forward. He had also urged the National Assembly to work in harmony
with the executive in order to drive home the campaign promises of President
Muhammadu Buhari a stance the NDRO said is commendable.
The Niger Delta Renaissance Organisation through its National
Secretary and Legal Adviser Barr. Kingsley Frank said such a patriotic call
should be heeded by well-meaning Nigerians in order to ensure the growth and
development of the country. The group said it was wrong of Nigerians to be
working against the President at this point in time when his administration is
yet to clock a year in office. The group said it is regrettable that some
persons who called themselves ex militant leaders will be threatening to go
back to the creeks to agitate against the Federal Government under Muhammadu
Buhari. “If they did not go back to the creeks when our brother was in power is
it justifiable that they make such calls now that somebody else is in power?”
the group queried.
The NDRO said it is imperative that Nigerians learn to
differentiate between governance and politics. It stressed that politics is
over as far as the government at the center is concerned. “What we should
understand is that politics is over as far as the Federal Government is concerned.
What we need now is good governance and we must learn to give the present
administration a benefit of doubt if we want them to get it right. This is why
we are commending the stance of the likes of Ateke Tom who has kicked against
the call from some quarters that militants get back to the creeks”.
The group said it will be wrong to call on youths to go back
to the creeks because it will not be either in their best interest or that of
the region. It urged the Federal Government to continue with programmes that will
help develop the Niger Delta region and its people stressing that with such
programmes and policies, the government will endear itself to the people of the
region.
