The Niger Delta Renaissance Organisation has accused former
President Olusegun Obasanjo of attempting to incite Nigerians against the
Present administration under President Muhammadu Buhari.
The group in a press statement signed by its National
Coordinator Comrade Nwokoma Messiah and Director of Publicity Amakiri Christiana
said comments credited to the former President recently in which he said
education is the best way to tackle the Boko Haram insurgency and his criticism
of former President Jonathan that the Niger Delta people will suffer is aimed
at causing disaffection in the courty thereby inciting the citizens against the
present administration.
It should be noted that the immediate past administration
initiated an education programme to promote Alma Jiri education in the north an
action that was criticized by a section of the people of the north. The group
said Obasanjo by reminding Buhari of the need to emphasize education in the
fight against Boko Haram, is attempting to box Buhari into a spot that will
make him look like a President that is not interested in education as a way of
developing the minds of northern youths. The group asked Obasanjo to show what
he did in using education to liberate the northern youths from the shackles of religious
bigotry while in power. “To criticize a serving administration is usually easy
especially with the ilk of Obasanjo who forgot all what he is saying now while
he was in power”. The group urged Obasanjo to remain silent the way a true statesman
is expected to be. “We expect the former President whose administration failed
this country greatly to behave like a true statesman by respecting the virtue
of silence and speak when it is absolutely necessary” the group said.
On the statement credited to Chief Olusegun Obasanjo that the
people of the Niger Delta region will suffer as a result of the actions and
inactions of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, the group said it is the height of
mischief from someone of Obasanjo’s age and status.
The group warned the President to beware of Obasanjo whose urge
and plan to head an interim government has not died. “With the way things are
going today, it is very clear the ex-President is happy about it because if
time is not taken, a strong crisis will brew up promoted by Obasanjo with the
sole aim of actualizing his third term agenda through an interim government
contraption” the group said.
