High Chief Ateke Tom a former militant war lord in the region
has persistently preached the message of peace in the Niger Delta. He has also
used entertainment to promote peace and unity in the region. His usual
October1st National Day celebration which he uses to celebrate the acceptance
of amnesty by his camp has entered the world map of entertainment due to the
array of stars that perform at the event he holds in his Okrika home town.
So when the members of the International Association of World
Peace Advocates (IAWPA) led by its International Spokesman Amb. Emmanuel Nkweke
visited him in his Okrika country home ahead of the United Nations World Peace
Day celebration billed for Wednesday 21st of September 2016 at the auditorium
of the River State House of Assembly Complex Port Harcourt, being the peace
ambassador that he is, he did not relent to give them his backing. “I hope that the issue of violence in the
region will be positively tackled with the kind of effort your association is
putting in place” he told the United Nations accredited Peace ambassadors.
It is a general notion in Rivers state and the restive Niger
Delta region that if all stakeholders emulate the efforts of High Chief Ateke
Tom in pursuing peace then the nation’s military will not need to expend so
much money and resources in foiling the ever rising tide of violence in the
region.
