The race for who
becomes the leader of the two arms of government come this June has become an
interesting and intriguing in the past
days not with the verbosity of the Chairman of the ruling party especially as
it has to do with who the party has anointed. The Chairman's stance which does
not go very well with lots of his party members have led to the decision of
members of his party to defile his stance which they consider undemocratic.
They have thrown their hats into the ring believing that majority of the
members will do the needful by voting against imposition.
It is the general
belief of most members I have interacted with that the desperation to impose
the candidates which the chairman had been bandying is to ensure that the
leader of the party has a smooth sailing to the presidency come 2023. As much
as this may not be a fact, the actions of the chairman have continued to lend
credence to this conspiracy theory.
Many Nigerians have
been wondering why the desperation? This is not the first time the National
Assembly will be electing it's leaders but it seems to be the first time a
party chairman will be showing clear desperation to defile democratic ethos by whipping
his party members in the legislature to do his bidding without bringing into
consideration the fact that most of those he is cow toeing are accomplished
politicians that cannot be treated like mere school pupils.
It is for this reason
that Nigerians have with happiness welcomed the decision of members to defile
his plan to install a president come 2023 through the back door. The decision
of the likes of Sen. Goje and Sen.Ndume to contest the Senate Presidency and
that of Hon. Dyegh and Hon. Bago as well as Hon. Namdas has been referred to as
the greatest effort to salvage our democracy hence the need for stakeholders
especially members of the incoming 9th National Assembly to support their
patriotic aspiration.
The case of Hon John
Dyegh is most interesting and needs to be looked into as regards equity and
justice.
If Hon. Dyegh
eventually makes it, he will become the only head of an arm of government that
aside being from the Christian faith will also be representing the minority
groups in the country. The implication of this is that the minority groups in
the country will be represented in the leadership of the country. This must not
be neglected in determining who emerges as leaders of either of the two arms of
the 9th Senate.
Our dear country has been
enmeshed in serious injustice and we must not let it stand by rubber stamping
the alleged endorsement of certain elected legislators by the Chairman of the
ruling party who has in his inordinate ambition of installing the party leader
as president come 2023 has become blind to the reality of the Nigerian system..
As a Niger Deltan whose
region did not support the ruling party as witnessed in the last general
elections, I am of the opinion that the North Central that gave the party and
Mr. President so much support should not be overlooked for the south west that
has a vice President and leader of the party. Anything other than what they
have got will be unjust to say the least.
Having interacted with
Hon. Dyegh as well as his contributions on the floor of the Green Chambers I believe he can make a
good Speaker which the ruling party will be proud of. He is calm, a good team
player and a respecter of authority. His legislative interest is people
oriented and he has the support of his people. What else does the party need?
Moreover his emergence will also not tear the party apart as it will do if the
party hierarchy insists on their road to infamy by attempting to impose
leaders.
The coming weeks
leading to the election of new leaders of both chambers promises to be
intriguing and full of suspense. The emergence of the most acceptable person expectedly, in the
person of Hon. Dyegh will be a resounding icing on the cake of the whole
intrigues.
