Recently
the Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress APC unveiled its new
party secretariat in Port Harcourt the Rivers State Capital. The Commissioning
which was witnessed by an array of party faithful across the state signified
the preparedness of the party to take over from what Sen. Magnus Ngei Abe who
commissioned the Secretariat described as the contraption in the Rivers state government
House.
The
fact that the who is who in the fold of the All Progressives Congress APC graced
the occasion is not actually the news. What came as the take home message that
day for everybody present and those that followed up the news is the way and
manner the governorship faithful in the state under the party Magnus Abe showed
maturity in urging all the members of the party in the state to come together
as one in the bid to take over the state. The senator representing Rivers West
in the Senate did not toe the line of other politicians who would have resorted
to name calling and raining abuses on people who did not share their views on
the party structure in the state.
I
had followed the social media and witnessed commendations upon commendations
that greeted the call of the former Secretary of the Rivers State government
that the party stay united in the task ahead. One vociferous critic of the Senator
had posted that ‘’this man has humbled me with the maturity of his address to
members of our party... I am forced to do a rethink on my stand against him’’.
My good friend is not the only one on the boat. A lot of people who joined the
party out of genuine mission to effect positive change in the state also bought
into the patriotic call for unity in the party.
What
a lot of people who have taken sides in the perceived factionalisation of the
party in the state fail to understand is that legally, as it stands today, the
Peter Odike led Executive of the part in the state remains the platform to
rally round in other to ensure that the success of the party which we crave for
and whic is on course, is achieved. So far, the Odike group has shown maturity
in its dealings despite the unprovoked physical and propaganda attacks against
it. This is what democracy stands for and it is for this reason that decent
people that have flocked into the party in droves have continued to identify
with the EXCO.
Atavistic
politicians have described politics as a do or die affair. Something which some
modern day politicians have regrettably resorted to in their bid to grab power
at all cost. But as the world is moving away from such crude political tactics,
is it good that we as a people should resort to such crude methods? The answer
is definitely no. It is for this reason that I am reiterating the patriotic
call of the only APC member that has shown the stealth of character to declare
his ambition to run for the state’s Brick House open while others are still
waiting for the go ahead that we rally round the party and its leadership and
support the best candidate to win the election.
We
acknowledge the fact that Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi is the leader of the
party. He has done so much to position the party but having sacrificed the way
he has done we also advise that he does the needful by ensuring that legality and
legitimacy is not sacrificed in the cause of determining the emergence of
someone he has anointed on his own. This is democracy and we must not take the power
of the people for granted. Rivers people as it is today are determined to
change the contraption in Brick House Port Harcourt but we can only achieve this
by coming to the table with one accord and doing things in a rational and
civilised manner.
The
re-election bid of President Muhammadu Buhari and the taking over of the Rivers
state government House should be paramount and we must do all we can to win it
by supporting the efforts of the National Chairman of the Party Comrade Adams
Oshiomhole. Already with the mass defections into the APC from the PDP in the
state especially the impending defection of the Senator representing Rivers
West, the State Governor is tensed and the best way to give him the much needed
technical knockout will be to support the Odike led EXCO in the state and also
support the emergence of Sen. Magnus Abe as the flag bearer of the party come
2019. He is tested and trusted and has shown that he has the maturity, charisma
and requisite character to lead the state irrespective of party divide or
ethnic affiliations. He also has the political experience to lead a multi
ethnic state like Rivers State to greater heights. These are indices which
should be considered and as we do so, we must continue to show restraint
despite provocations and hope that God only can give power and not man.
