Seventeen state governors will be
awarded for the roles they have played in promoting the Sustainable Development
Goals. The award will be organised by the International Association of World
Peace Advocates (IAWPA) official partner to the United Nations on Sustainable
Development Goals.
The association in a press
statement signed by its international spokesman Amb. Emmanuel Nkweke said the award
ceremony is part of its activities to celebrate the 3rd anniversary
of the United Nations Sustainable Goals which was adopted by member states of
the UN date back 25th September 2015 in New-York.
According to the statement, the
governors of Lagos, Katsina, Rivers, Kogi, Anambra, Cross River, Akwa Ibom,
Kebbi, Bauchi, Imo, Taraba, Abia, Adamawa, Kano, Niger, Ogun and Kaduna states
will be awarded in various areas of the SDGs. The governors according to the
spokesman merited the award due to their activities in their respective states
on sustainable development.
The statement said other
individuals and organisations will be recognised for their efforts in promoting
the SDG programme namely Access-Bank, Zenith Bank, TVC New, UBEC, and NTA even
as the organisation has made invitations to all UN agencies in Nigeria to be
part of the event. The association said the Senior Special Adviser to the
President on SDG will be honoured with the award of 2018 African SDG Model
Award.
The statement said with the award
on the various state governors, they are expected to participate in the
forthcoming 2019 United Nations High Level Political Forum on Sustainable
Development Goals. It said the achievements of the governors will be displayed
at the Global Festival of Action on SDG in Bonn, Germany next year adding that
the first SDG Dashboard will be launched at the ceremony.
The award is expected to hold on
Saturday 25th of September 2018 at Sheraton Hotels, Abuja. President
Muahmmadu Buhari and the Ghanaian President who is the Co-Chair of the UN-SDG Advocates
is expected to be the Special Guest of honours and Guest Speaker at the event.
Highlights of the event according
to the statement include the cutting of the 3rd Anniversary Cake by
the American Ambassador to Nigeria, Lightening of the SDG Clock by the Canadian
Ambassador to Nigeria and the unveiling of the SDG Badges by the British
Ambassador to Nigeria.
The association urged government
officials at all levels to ensure that they tailor their programmes to embrace
the SDG goals which it described as pivotal to overall development of mankind
and ensure their participation at the event.
