The Niger Delta
Renaissance Organisation NDRO has raised the alarm that Nigeria’s democracy is under
threat with the various calls on Nigerians to leave where they reside because
they are not from that region.
The group made this
alarm known as a result of the recent threat by militants in the region that
northerners should leave the Niger Delta.
The NDRO said the
statement was reckless and does not represent the view of the generality of
Niger Delta people. The statement which was signed by the Secretary General of
the group Kingsley Frank said Niger Delta people still believe in the unity of
the country but needs restructuring which it says will address all inadequacies
being experienced in the country today.
The statement hailed
the position of the former Vice President that the country needs restructuring.
“We commend the position of the former
Vice president of the country that Nigeria needs restructuring. This is not a farfetched
position because it is only through restructuring in the country that we can
make progress and stay united without all these sentiments that are been
raised.”
The group while
commending the neutrality of the Nigerian army also urged them to stay out of
politics. “We know some unscrupulous politicians will be urging members of the
Nigerian military to safeguard the unity of the country by intervening as
alleged by the Chief of Army Staff. Our advice to the military is that they
should not allow themselves to fall for the temptations of political office. As
much as we understand that their constitutional role is to maintain the
territorial integrity of the country, they should realize that the Nigerian
democracy is a project that cannot be pulled down. It has come to stay and should
be allowed to stay”. The statement said.
