Nigeria’s Chief f Army Staff General Tukur Yusuf Buratai has been earmarked for an International Eminent Peace Award. The award is set to be presented to him in recognition of his contributions to the fight against insurgency in the country by the International Association of World Peace Advocates IAWPA a body registered under the United Nations and also bore its Economic and Social Council ECOSOC Status.
The International spokesman of IAWPA Amb. Emmanuel Nkweke made this known in a press statement made available to news houses. The statement said as much as it recognizes the fact that the insurgency in the north has not been completely eliminated, it is important to appreciate the fact that it has been controlled and limited to only some areas of the country. The statement said it will be completely insensitive not to appreciate the efforts of the Nigerian military especially that of the Chief of Army Staff in battling insurgency and banditry in the country hence the fight against criminality should be a concern to all.
The statement also called on patriotic Nigerians to offer useful information that will help the nation’s security apparatus to tackle insecurity in the country.
On the upcoming award to be bestowed on the nation’s Army Chief the statement said it is in recognition of the professionalism and gallantry the military has shown in the fight against insurgency and banditry in the country as well as the maturity it displayed as regards soldier community relationships. “you can recall the level of solidarity which the nation’s army shown during the lockdown that greeted the pandemic. Aside enforcing the lockdown, the military personnel also engaged the community by contributing palliatives to them most recently is the inauguration of multipurpose Dam in Jo's. The Nigeria Army under the leadership of Buratai has done much in their social corporate responsibilities compared to his predecessors. This is something that must be appreciated. The statement also sighted the building of a hospital by the military in Ebonyi state as efforts of the military that must be commended by the people.
It said the award will be given to General Buratai in commemoration of the United nations Peace Day which will be held on 21st September 2020. It said activities marking the peace day will begin with the UN PEACE MARATHON billed for Port Harcourt South South Nigeria. Other activities will also include the hoisting of the UN-SDG Peace Flag in Maiduguri Borno state as well as other towns in the north eastern parts of the country. Amb. Emmanuel Nkweke is calling on all Nigerians to support the Nigeria Army to achieve peace in Nigeria rather than casting aspersion on them.
