RELEASE IKOT EKPENE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY ELECTION RESULTS WITHOUT DELAY - COALITION OF OBSERVER GROUPS IN AKWA IBOM URGE INEC

A Coalition of observer groups that observed the February 23rd Presidential and National Assembly elections in Ikot Ekpene Senatorial zone has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC to release the results of the National Assembly elections in Ikot Ekpene Senatorial zone without delay.

The Coalition in a press statement signed by Comrade Nwokoma Messiah and Peter John said the delay in announcing the results aside being suspicious, can lead to preventable  chaos within the senatorial zone.
The observer groups said they witnessed the elections in the zone and stated that it was generally peaceful. It therefore wondered why the electoral umpire could be delaying the results thereby creating unnecessary anxiety. The group said the terrain of the senatorial zone is not very bad neither was there crisis in the zone that would  necessitate the delay in announcing the results.

The group said it is disheartening that while it is evident that the election was peaceful within the area and the turnout was encouraging, INEC can still be withholding announcement of the election results. "It will be a shame that after such peaceful election, INEC can still be delaying the announcement of the results of the election. We urge them to release the results without further delay in order to douse the tension in the area".

The coalition condemned the resort to raising rumours against politicians in the state in order to create intimidation and confusion among followers of leaders of political parties, the Coalition of observer groups hailed the people of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial zone for their peaceful disposition during the election. "While we thank the people of the senatorial zone for conducting themselves during the course of the elections despite a few hitches here and there as regards malfunctioning of some card readers, we believe the results will reflect the wishes of the generality of the people of the zone". the statement added.
