On Dumo Lulu Briggs’ Defection To The APC


Rivers State which happens to be the political and economic capital of the South South geo political zone of the country was in the news politically within the week. It started with the announcement by the Peoples Democratic Party PDP which is the ruling party in the state that the governor will be receiving the first batch of over 8,000 decampees of the All Progressives Congress APC into its fold. While the PDP hierarchy were yet basking in the euphoria of the announcement of receiving the over 8,000 decampees of the APC, they were hit by the news that one of the most foremost politicians in the PDP fold was decamping to the All Progressives Congress APC.
The fact that the euphoria, pump and propaganda that was used to press home the acceptance of the APC decampees fizzled out immediately the news of the defection of Chief Barr. Dumo Lulu Briggs to the APC jolted them was evident in the quietness the PDP went about their affairs within the week. The usual pump that greeted such reception of decampees by the state governor was missing.
Some people may argue that Chief Dumo Lulu Briggs after all is a single individual and does not equate to the number of those that left the APC for the PDP but the clout he has brought to the APC through his defection is something nobody can deny. If there is any politician in Rivers State who has the appeal to the people of Rivers State, the Abonnema born politician in Dumo is one that has such appeal. The fact that almost a double of the number of those the governor of the state and the PDP apparatchik expressed their willingness to receive, ditched the ruling party in the state almost two days later was something they never saw coming and it also underscored the value which he has in the political affairs of the state.
The APC surely will be counting how lucky they are to have caught such a political asset because Chief Dumo Lulu Briggs who was a leading governorship aspirant in the last Governorship election during the sham primaries that led to the emergence of the present governor in the state, has a very strong structure which will be highly beneficial to the APC in the coming days.
Whatever may be the motivation for him to have joined the party, I may not immediately know but one thing I know for sure is that it will definitely be for the overall good of the people of Rivers state this is because he is a man that loves the people of his state and is willing to do all it takes to identify with their needs and fortunately for him too, the people also see him in such light. I was privileged to work with him during the build up to the last general elections and as I have earlier posited, despite not having been given the chance to contest the primaries which led to his decision alongside other contestants to boycott, he still never deemed it fit to leave the party like others. He stayed with the party and urged his supporters to do same despite the fact that ex President Goodluck Jonathan lost the Presidential elections. This quality characterizes the personality of Chief Dumo Lulu Briggs and I strongly believe that the All Progressives Congress APC will find such a personality to its own advantage.
The decision of Dumo Lulu Briggs to have dumped the party may have sent shock waves throughout the state and the country at large but one thing which they don’t fail to disagree is the fact that the present administration in the state and the kind of politicking within the ruling party is something that is seriously discouraging to modern politicians. Rivers state is a leading state in the country and it will be wrong to see people who fail the standard of modern politics to foist their style on those in tune with modern politics. Chief Dumo Lulu Briggs is not the everyday Nigerian politician. He is one of the best the state can offer and not minding whatever the spin doctors of the PDP might say, his decision to leave them has given the PDP a big blow which will be to the advantage of the APC.
President Muhammadu Buhari despite the challenges he is facing, is doing a good job at the Federal level and it will not be out of place for the likes of Dumo and others who have left the PDP to show him the necessary support he needs to ensure that the country is repositioned for greater heights.
As I conclude this piece, I will really want to appreciate this bold move of Chief Barr. Dumo Lulu Briggs in moving on with his political future by opting for the All Progressives Congress APC and just like I earlier stated, I may not know what motivated him to opt for the APC but one thing I surely know is that his decision to a large extent is for the overall good of the people of Rivers state.
