Federal Government Reaches Agreement With ASUU And Releases N15.4bn To Public Universities

The Nigerian government has reached an agreement with striking University lecturers, raising the possibility of ending the teachers prolonged industrial action. The national president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU), Biodun Ogunyemi, said the National Executive Committee of the union will review its decisions based on the new commitment by the federal government. He said the strike could only be called off after the NEC meeting. He did not say when the meeting will hold. After the Monday meeting, the labour minister, Chris Ngige, said an agreement had been reached. According to him, the accountant general and the ministry of finance has confirmed with evidence that N15.4 billion had been released to public universities. On earned allowances, Mr Ngige said President Buhari has approved N20 billion to be used to offset the outstanding arrears of the 2009 to 2012 verified earnings in the universities. Fayemi Flags Off N20.2b Ero Rehabilitation Project

Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi has flagged off the rehabilitation of Ero dam and replacement of transmission main pipelines with an expectation that the project would address water  shorthortage and curb open defecation. Speaking at the flag off ceremony in Ikun Ekiti, Fayemi expressed optimism that the $55 million project - 20.2billion when converted to Naira, which is co-sponsored by the World Bank and the state government would give a sigh of relief to the nine local government areas supplied by the dam when uninterrupted potable water is made available to them. The governor stated that Ekiti State has been investing in water and sanitation sector with efforts to rehabilitate some of the dams within the State in collaboration with the European Union and the World Bank. A National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Amina Zakari, has dismissed reports that she is a blood relation of President Muhammadu Buhari. The Peoples Democratic Party and other political groups as well as individuals had alleged that Zakari, who was, on Thursday, named by the commission as its Chairman, Advisory Committee and Presidential Election Collation Centre Committee, has a relationship with Buhari.
